Dr Hom Dhakal has more than 27 years of teaching and research experience in the field of mechanical engineering, materials and manufacturing, operations and project management. Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in BEng. (Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Distance Learning (DL) at the School of Engineering. His main areas of research include polymer composites and nanocomposites, sustainable hybrid composites, biobased lightweight materials and investigating their mechanical, thermal and environmental properties for engineering applications. He has publications in numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. He has successfully supervised and completed many PhDs as the Director of Studies (first supervisor) and also several PhDs as an external examiner. He has also served as a member of scientific committees and as a guest editor for scientific journals and a member of an editorial board and an evaluator for research projects. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), Chartered Engineer (CEng), a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a member of the American Society for Composites (ASC). His current research projects include developing lightweight hybrid composites using renewable resins reinforced with regenerated cellulose and natural fibres and investigating their mechanical and environmental properties.
